FAQ for Massage Novices

Where Will My Massage or Bodywork Session Take Place?

You may choose to receive your therapeutic massage session at your home, your office, or at Karen's massage office.

If you choose your home or your office, you will need a space approximately 16 by 14 feet that can be closed off from family members and the outside world.  Also, it is preferable to have either a CD player or an outlet for a portable player.  Low lighting is necessary for a relaxing environment, so window coverings and lamps are preferable.  There is a $20 travel fee for residents 30 miles from Karen's office and a $10 fee for residents less than 30 miles distance.

If you choose Karen's office, your massage or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a heated table especially designed for your comfort.  Karen's office is conveniently located off of Six Forks Road, just south of Celebration Station at 138 Mine Lake Court behind Eye Care Associates.  Please call (919-818-6068) to make an appointment today.

Must I Be Completely Undressed?

Most massage and bodywork techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed. Most clients disrobe down to their underwear, however, you may decide what amount of clothing you prefer to wear for your own comfort. If you choose to remain completely clothed, the massage modality options for your session are limited.  You will be properly draped during the session.  This means that the areas receiving massage will be undraped only while they are being worked, and that at no time are private areas (genitals and breast tissue) exposed.

Will I Be Covered During the Session?

You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.

Will Karen Be Present When I Disrobe?

Karen will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with a clean sheet and blanket.  She will knock on the door and make sure you are on the table and covered before entering the massage studio.

What Parts of My Body Will Be Massaged?

Karen will discuss with you the desired outcome of your session. This will determine which parts of your body require massage.  Karen will not work an area you wish to not receive touch.  A typical full-body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders. Some clients substitute one of these areas for a abdominal massage when digestive issues are present.  Also, persons with hip and/or low back problems often choose to receive gluteal work.  In this case the butt crease always remains draped. You will not be touched on or near your genitals (male or female) or breasts (female).

Will Lubricant Be Used?

Karen offers clients a choice between an oil and a cream.  The advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed prior to making such a decision.  These are used to permit your muscles to be worked on without causing excessive friction to the skin. The lubricants used should hydrate the skin and be readily absorbed.

What Will the Massage or Bodywork Feel Like?

Your session will begin with broad, flowing strokes that will help to calm your nervous system and ease exterior muscle tension. As your body unwinds, pressure will gradually be increased to relax and relieve specific areas of muscular tension. You should communicate with Karen immediately if you feel any discomfort so that pressure can be lightened or another approach can be taken. Massage and bodywork are generally most effective when your body is not resisting.

How Long Will the Session Last?

The average full-body massage or bodywork session lasts approximately one hour. A half-hour appointment only allows time for a partial massage session, for instance the neck and shoulders, back, or legs and feet. Many people prefer a sixty to a ninety minute session for optimal relaxation.  Always allow relaxation time prior to and after the session. Hot tubs, steam baths, and saunas can assist in the relaxation process.

What Should I Do During the Massage or Bodywork Session?

Make yourself comfortable. Karen will gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people just close their eyes during their session. Feel free to ask Karen questions about massage and bodywork in general or about the particular technique you are receiving.

How Will I Feel After the Massage or Bodywork Session?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity.  After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity, which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water afterward.

What Are the Benefits of Massage and Bodywork?

Massage and bodywork can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure. Massage and bodywork are also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety, and create an overall sense of well-being. For a more detailed and extensive explanation of benefits see the page on this website entitled "benefits of massage and bodywork therapy".

Are There any Medical Conditions that Would Make Massage or Bodywork Inadvisable?

Yes. That's why it's imperative that before you begin your session, Karen ask general health questions. It is very important that you inform Karen of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor's care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage or bodywork prior to any session. In some situations, Karen may require your MD's approval.
